COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) The Columbus Air Force Base is on an 11 day furlough beginning this week.

Four hundred plus employees will have to take one day a week off of work, totaling to a 20% pay cut. The furlough is being mandated by the United States Department of Defense and military branches across the country are being affected.

“There’s over 10 fighter bomber squads in the country that are not flying today, they’re grounded because we don’t have the money to make them fly. I’m doing my part to balance the budget. We’ve obviously been spending too much so we all take solace in the face that were doing our part,” said Sonic Johnson, Chief of Public Affairs.

The furlough will end on September 30th.
