COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi’s secretary of state is in our area Monday, raising awareness about the new voter ID law.

As the state’s chief election officer, Secretary Delbert Hosemann is getting voters ready for the June 3rd primary election, when they’ll have to start showing a photo ID.

This comes after more than 60 percent of voters approved the constitutional amendment back in 2011.

Hosemann tells WCBI he believes showing an ID will speed up the voting process.

“Instead of coming in and saying, ‘My name is Delbert Hosemann,’ and they always say, ‘Well, Gilbert what?’ You know, they never get the name right. I’m going to show them my ID. So they’ll be able to actually look on the voter rolls and see my ID and my picture right there with it, and be able to go faster, I think,” Hosemann said.
