Missionary With Starkville Ties Still Held In Macedonia

(STARKVILLE, MS) (WCBI) A Meridian nurse practitioner who works in the OCH Regional Medical center E-R. Remains in a Macedonian detention center.

Candi Dunlap Nelson was in Macedonia as part of a church mission trip when customs officials detained her as she was leaving to return home two weeks ago.

Nelson had been given some Macedonian coins as a gift and unknown to her, those coins are considered artifacts and leaving the country with them is considered smuggling.

Details on efforts to free her are limited because of the sensitive nature of the talks with Macedonian authorities.

U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker’s office would only say they have been in contact with the State Department concerning Nelson’s detention.

Next week, a judge is supposed to set a date for her trial. T-shirts are being sold to raise money for legal, travel and living expenses for her and her family. T-shirts may be purchased by going to www.mprintsonline.com and selecting the “Prayers for Candi” organization, using the access code, “Candi.”  However, if you choose not to purchase a t-shirt, donations can be made to a fund set up in her name at Citizens National Bank.
