Mississippi Options Limited Under Federal Health Insurance

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Many Mississippians may have no options when the new federal health insurance marketplace starts enrolling customers in October.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney says two insurers have announced offerings so far, and they plan to serve 46 of Mississippi’s 82 counties.

Unless something changes, consumers in remaining counties will have no options to buy health insurance through the online exchange. That means they will have no use for federal tax credits offered to consumers with incomes between 133 percent and 400 percent of poverty level.

Magnolia Health Plan will offer coverage in 46 counties. It is a unit of St. Louis-based Centene Corp., and runs a Mississippi Medicaid network with 77,000 enrollees.

Humana, based in Louisville, Ky., will offer coverage in four of the 46 counties included in Magnolia’s plan.
