MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-When severe weather strikes, Monroe County residents will have even more tools to better prepare them. A federal grant will add 11 tornado sirens to the county’s existing network of 28. The county will match just under 14 thousand dollars of the 276 thousand in federal money. The sirens will be spread in rural areas. The grant includes new software that will allow the sirens to operate separate from the county’s 9-1-1 system. Sirens also will be able to notify separate areas of the county. County emergency officials say the sirens aren’t meant to replace TV warnings, weather radios and the CODE Red text and phone alerts but supplement them to improve safety. Residents still are encouraged to sign up for the Code Red system through the Three Rivers Planning and Development District.
