Video: Monroe County Coroner Says Rice Died Due to Drowning

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — The cause of death has been announced for the man who died Thursday due to a barge incident.

56-year-old George Rice’s body was discovered under an overturned barge in a sediment pond Thursday morning near Tronox headquarters in Hamilton.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said Rice died due to drowning.

JIMCO and Tronox have expressed their condolences in Rice’s death, and say all dredging operations have been halted to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by the West Memorial Funeral Home in Starkville.
