MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Some Monroe County residents are preparing for the next storm by getting a weather radio.

The Seniors and Law Enforcement Together Council received a grant to purchase 180 weather radios for Monroe County. You had to be at least 60 years old to be eligible for the program. Weather radios send alerts and safety tips when severe weather is approaching. The radios have been credited with saving lives during April’s tornado outbreak.

“I feel like it would help me to be alert on what is coming and let me know to take shelter at a certain time. I think it’s a very good thing,” says Viola Haynes, a Monroe County resident who received a weather radio.

The Mississippi Leadership Council on Aging sponsored the grant.
