Monroe Residents Encouraged to Sign up for CodeRed, More Sirens Sought

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Worried residents in many parts of Monroe County could get a little more warning when severe weather is coming.

E-911 Director Bunky Goza was authorized Friday to apply for state and federal grants to cover 75 percent of the $278,444 needed to install 11 warning sirens. If approved, Goza said the new sirens would provide coverage to virtually every corner of the state’s third largest county.

Aberdeen, Amory, Becker, Smithville, Hatley and Hamilton have sirens.

Goza also encouraged residents to sign up for the county’s Code Red alert system that sends warnings of storms, escapees, chemical spills or other disasters to residents’ phones. Only about 4,200 people have signed up so far.

To sign up, go to the Three Rivers Planning and Development District web site at http://www.trpdd.com/ and click on the “CodeRed” button.
