MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s going to be a busy 30 days for Monroe County road crews.

Earlier this year, supervisors issued $3 million in bonds for a massive three-year road program.

Since then, county crews have been prepping roads for fall paving. When a new piece of equipment arrives next week, they’ll start what county leaders hope will be 26 days of paving that will roll into October.

Once that begins, other crews will begin clearing rights-of-way and ditches and laying gravel for next year’s work.

“This road in particular is Chapel Grove Road. As you can see, it’s got a lot of residences on it. If you scan down through there, the road is just old, it’s been here for years. We’ve come in and widened it and clear it and reditched it. This road will probably get done sometime around the third week in September,” Road Manager Sonny Clay said.

The program calls for sealing some roads and paving many others. It covers about 50 miles and Clay hopes to have it completed in less than three years.
