WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – There’s an addition to the golf scene in West Point that has fans of the links talking Wednesday.

Old Waverly and Mossy Oak are partnering to open a new course. The Mossy Oak Golf Course will be right across the street from Old Waverly and is expected to open by 2017.

“The idea is to become more of a destination” Old Waverly founder and owner George Bryan said. “Avid golfers like going to play where they can play two courses.”

The project is based on minimizing the footprint on the local habitat. It’s known as “nature’s golf.” The designers are promoting sustainability. Read more about the concept here.

“Nature’s golf is a great saying,” course architect Gil Hanse said. “It’s something that we’ve believed in for a long time. Every golf course that we work on should look and feel like it’s indigenous.”

The par 72 course will have a club house and guest cabins. A part of the facilities will also be home to the Mississippi State men’s and women’s golf teams.

WCBI will have more on the new course and its impact on the community this week.
