COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) -Choir and orchestra students from the Mississippi School for Math and Science will be touring the southern part of the state very soon. It’s part of the fall project called “Sight’s and Sounds of Mississippi”.

M-S M-S students have been practicing a set list that includes country, early rock and roll, jazz and even the blues.

“I think it’s amazing because I’ve never played this much jazz and country before and I think it’s going to be a lot more exciting to be able to be a part of the south,” said student Emoree Heiselt.

“I think it’s important that they understand the wonderful things and impact Mississippi had has on the world as far as culture and American music is concerned so when they leave they’ll be better informed ambassadors for the state,” said conductor Dawn Barham.

58 students make up MSMS Blue notes. Now these students will get a chance to travel to the south of the state and play a little bit of music from the roots of Mississippi.

But before they can go on tour, they’re making sure they’re all in sync.

“It’s been a lot of work, I mean we have to come in something for sectionals and practices beyond this class,” said student William Kao.

“It’s really tough because there’s a lot of different sections that we need to work on. But eventually we’ll get it and it’ll sound really good,” added student Xen Gaerlan.

For some of these students it’s their first time traveling around the state.

“I’m looking forward to seeing different places because I’ve never been past Jackson so that will be interesting,” said student Sabrina Micha.

“I love it, I like going around to the different places and seeing all the different things,” added student Rayelle Brown.

And while on tour not only will they be playing they’ll also learn all about the history of Mississippi music.
The MSMS Blue Notes will have their first performance November 9th at the veterans day celebration in Biloxi.
