MSU Jobs Programs Getting National Attention

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi State’s unique economic recruitment and entrepreneurship programs are getting national attention. But it’s because of things they are doing at home.

MSU’s academic prpogram focuses on building jobs from the ground up by training young students to be bankers and entrepreneurs. Already 19 students are operating their own businesses.

Another program provides economic development services to small towns that can’t afford it otherwise. That includes helping match prospective companies with available buildings from Vernon, Ala. to Winona.

“We are doing a lot of research in the areas that are very important to the state of Mississippi such as family business and entrepreneurs. We are educating students to be bankers, not only in the state of Mississippi but throughout the country,” explained Dr. Sharon Oswalk, who overseas the outreach programs.

“we are doing a lot of entrepreneurship training and supporting communities. I have been on nine site visits in the last week in four counties in two states. So any way we can leverage our resources in helping job creation and job growth, that is the mission of a land grant institution,” added Jeffrey Rupp, who works in the business program in both entrepreneurship and community development.

Rupp and Oswalk spoke to the Columbus Kiwanis Club today.
