Video: MSU Students Information Hacked

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) - Mississippi State University administrators say no important personal data was compromised in an apparent hacking incident.

“As a student here I feel like I should feel more secure,” says a student.

And many others in the school community felt the same when the universities computer security was breached Wednesday morning and 535 usernames and passwords were posted to a hacking website.

“This is something that we’re all concerned about, the good news is that while the claims of the hacker were rather dramatic the results were some what less,” said Director of University Relations Sid Salter.

The Brazilian hacker goes by the twitter name @Gevolus. The information was posted on HackRead.com but MSU administrators say that most of the information accessed could be found in the universities telephone directory. MSU’s Information security committee has done it’s best to get the data breach under control.

“They were able to win in that no social security data was lost, no social security numbers, no credit and information, no health information, no grades, and so those were the thing we were most concerned about,” added Salter.

And even though most of the information leaked is from employees of the university, students are still concerned what will be done in the future to protect their information.

“This could have been a lot more serious in the fact that credit cards information could have been stolen and since I haven’t heard about it yet schools either trying to keep it under wraps or haven’t done enough or have not done a good enough job informing us of the incident itself,” said student Dominic Henn.

As a precaution, users that may be affected have been notified to change their account passwords.

“It’s a battle that’s fought on this campus just as it is on Wall Street and in the halls of the government,” adds Salter.

Administrators says Mississippi State continually modifies its systems and practices to enhance the security of sensitive information.
