MUW Art Students Have Senior Exhibit

COLUMBUS, Miss. — The artwork of 11 seniors will be displayed from Tuesday, April 23 through Saturday, May 11 at Mississippi University for Women’s Eugenia Summer Gallery. The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, April 26th with artist talks starting at 5 p.m.

Seniors exhibiting artwork:

Nisa Moody, 25, from Rienzi. Moody graduated from Alcorn Central High School in 2005. Upon completion of this semester, she will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design and a bachelor of arts in English with an emphasis in writing. After graduation, Moody plans to move to Washington, D.C., to pursue a position with the historical Smithsonian Museum.

Blaine Garrard, 23, from Columbus. Garrard graduated from Heritage Academy in 2008.  Upon completion of this semester, He will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design. After graduation, Garrard plans to move to Memphis, Tenn., to acquire a position with a design firm in the metropolitan area.

Kourtney Riley, 22, from Starkville. Riley was dual enrolled at East Mississippi Community College before coming to MUW. Upon completion of this semester, she will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in painting and drawing. After graduation, Riley is planning to attend graduate school for museum studies.

Kelsey Smith, 22, from Baldwyn. Smith graduated as the valedictorian from Baldwyn High School in 2009. After receiving her associate of arts at Northeast Mississippi Community College, she transferred to The W where she will graduate with a bachelor of fine arts in art education after her student teaching next semester. After graduation, Smith will be applying to various schools in the North Mississippi area in hopes of finding an art position within the public school system.

Natalie Thomas, 22, from Madison. Thomas graduated from Madison Central High School in 2008. She will receive her bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design. Upon completion of the semester, Thomas will work as a free-lance designer until she is able to obtain a full time position with a firm in the North Mississippi area.

Olufemi Sobayo, 23, from Lagos, Nigeria. Sobayo graduated from Nigerian Air Force Secondary School before coming to America to attend The W. Upon completion of this semester, Sobayo will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design and a minor in business marketing. After graduation, he has plans to move to Atlanta, Ga., where he will work for a year before going back to school for his master’s degree.

Tiffany Dugger, 24, from Hazlehurst. Dugger graduated from Hazlehurst High School in 2007. Upon completion of this semester, she will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design.

Mysteria (Mysti) Guthery, 30, from Smithville. Upon completion of this semester, Guthery will be receiving a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in photography. She is the only studio major with a photography emphasis to be graduating this semester. Guthery currently owns and operates a small snowball hut in Smithville called Retro Sno. After graduation, she plans to get her teaching certificate and teach art.

Kalyn Fuller, 24, from Columbus. Fuller graduated from New Hope High School in 2006. She will be graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in graphic design. Upon completion of the semester, Fuller has plans to apply for a position with the United Services Organization in Arlington, Va. She has a husband and a 2-year-old daughter that she is looking forward to spending more time with.

Kacie Roberts, 23, from Columbus. Roberts graduated from Starkville Academy in 2008. She will be graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in studio art with an emphasis in painting and drawing. Upon completion of the semester, Roberts plans to pursue a master’s degree.

Ariana Davis, 22, from Pascagoula. Davis graduated from Pascagoula High School and then went on to North West Community College before coming to The W. She will be graduating with a bachelor of arts in studio art. Upon completion of the semester, Davis plans to apply the artistic skills she has learned at The W to further her theatrical career.

The Senior Exhibition is a requirement for all bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of arts students planning to graduate from The W with a degree in the arts.

The Eugenia Summer Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located in the Art and Design Building on the Southwest corner of the MUW campus between Stark Recreation Center and Fant Library. The Gallery is often able to extend viewing hours for special circumstances.
