COLUMBUS, Miss. — Mississippi University for Women’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was recognized as a Chapter of Merit by the national Phi Kappa Phi organization. This is the fourth consecutive year that the group has been recognized.

The goal of the Chapter Recognition Program is to reward those chapters that exhibit outstanding performance. Recipients of the award receive a commendation from the society president, special recognition on the society’s website and a custom logo designed for the chapter’s use. Out of more than 318 chapters nationwide, only 73 received recognition status.

To qualify, the chapter must meet certain requirements including holding regular meetings, having annual initiations and submit an annual report. Undergraduate students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 and graduate students must maintain a 4.0 to be considered for nomination.

MUW’s chapter was chartered in 1955. Dr. Dorothy Berglund, the current president, also serves as sponsor.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated.
