LOWNDES COUNTY, MISS. (WCBI) –   October 29th isn’t just another ordinary day..This day is set aside each year to celebrate National Cat Day. The goals of National Cat Day are to celebrate the love given by cats and also raise awareness for the growing need of cat adoptions.

This may not be the normal size cat you might think of living at Cedar Hill Animal Sanctuary.
Nearly, 200 domestic cats are kept at the organization’s Lowndes County location.

“The ones we have here are the ones nobody else wants, or if their missing a leg or if they can’t see, or we even have some cats that have no eyes. But their still just as loving and just as joyful as any animal here and they have a right to live just like any perfect animal, their all perfect to us,” said Cedar Hill employee, Angie Carver.

Statistics show more people own cats, but many times it is dogs that are rescued first.

“Cats are often looked over because people most likely prefer dogs but a lot of people really tend to cats because cats then to keep to themselves but their wonderful animals,” said Carver.

Darlene Brown has worked in the cat room for four years at the Columbus Humane Society. For her, it’s more than just about taking care of the cats while they wait on their forever home.

“Really sometimes I sit in that chair over there and cats, pets in general, relieve stress. You just sit and you just pet them and you brush and you talk to them,” said Brown.

National Cat Day has been around since 2005. The goal is to make sure more cats are adopted.

The Columbus Humane Society has more than 30 cats and kittens just like brother and sister, Bonnie and Clyde right here, ready to be adopted out to great families.

Brown says, so far,  adoptions have been slow this year.

“We need people to come on down and give these babies a home. They need a home, they need love, they need attention. We have beautiful kittens, so come on down,” said Brown.
