TUPELO, Miss. – (WCBI) It’s been quite a year for the Northeast Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross.

At their annual meeting, they recognized the volunteers and staff who answered the call when the devastating tornado hit Tupelo on April 28th. The volunteer of the year award went to Joe Lucas, but Red Cross Executive Patty Tucker says every one of the volunteers are important to the Red Cross mission.

“It was a special meeting because we had so many volunteers, so many donors, so many partners that helped us out during our tornado relief effort. So it was just a wonderful time to let the community know how much we appreciate them and how much we appreciate their support,” says Tucker.

Tucker says there is still much work to be done in the recovery efforts for the community, but Northeast Mississippi Red Cross volunteers are also in other locations helping out disaster victims.

The Red Cross is a non-profit organization that depends volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
