COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A 50,000-square-foot retail expansion that will bring Dick’s Sporting Goods to Columbus clears another hurdle.

Lowndes County supervisors approved a tax increment financing plan for the Chattonooga-based Hutton Group to build the addition to the University Mall complex that is anchored by Belk.

The new center will include Dick’s and a major home-hobby-related chain.

Construction is expected to be started early next year with the businesses expected to open by next fall.

The City Council is expected to approve the same deal Tuesday night.

The incentives allow some of the sales and property taxes generated by the development to be pumped back into road and utility improvements.

The supervisors also approved a deal for the hotel and restaurant complex under construction on 18th Avenue North.
