New Weapons Range in Works for Lowndes Law Enforcement and CAFB Personnel

LOWNDES, Miss. (WCBI) — Lowndes County law enforcement and Columbus Air Force Base personnel could have a new $1.5 million weapons range by October.

Lowndes supervisors today approved more bids on a 2-acre outdoor facility on 19 acres at the old Maxim Medical building owned by Columbus and Lowndes County.

The range will save the base $100,000 per year getting airmen weapons certified.

The city and county are putting up in-kind services while the state is providing more than $1 million as part of efforts to safeguard military facilities against the next round of federal base closures.

The old gun range next to Justice Court will be converted to other uses.
