Heather Sophia is the morning meteorologist for WCBI Sunrise.
Sophia is no stranger to WCBI viewers. The Award Winning Meteorologist worked at WCBI in 2008 & 2009, before leaving to join the Emmy Award Winning Weather team at 16 WAPT (ABC) in Jackson. While at WAPT, Sophia covered a number of major weather events including the winter storm that crippled the Capital City because of widespread water main breaks. And she was later nominated along with her colleagues for two Emmy Awards.
In 2011, Sophia won The Edward R. Murrow Award for her wall to wall coverage of the 2010 deadly Yazoo City Tornado. The April 24th EF4 tornado killed 4 people and caused millions in damage.
Her nearly decade long career includes forecasting for more than a dozen television stations and general assignment reporting. While at Mississippi State University, Sophia participated in the University of Oklahoma Weather Challenge competition and placed in the top 30 forecasters out of more than 1,000. In the fall of 2011, Sophia began a two year stint on the radio, by co-hosting Mississippi’s #1 Rated High School Football Scoreboard show on (Clear Channel Radio’s Miss 103 WSMI & 620am The Score WJDX).
Most recently Sophia was the Executive Vice President for bfac.com, an award winning technology company in Jackson. Under her leadership, bfac.com won the MTA (Innovate Mississippi) New Venture Challenge in 2011 & again in 2012 as the best Commercial Technology Company in Mississippi. The company boasts users in 137 countries with a number of fortune 500 clients.
When she is away from the WCBI forecaster center, Sophia loves spending time with her boyfriend and her dog Muffin. One thing you may or may not know about her is – she qualified for the Boston Marathon and ran it in 2012.
She is also an active volunteer with the Salvation Army and The CJ Stewart Foundation.
