Will is no stranger to North Mississippi. He grew up in the metropolis of Pontotoc, and most of his family still lives there. In February of 2001, a tornado passed a few miles from his house in Pontotoc, igniting his curiosity of weather. It was not until high school, though, that he realized he wanted to turn weather into a career.

While earning his pilot’s license, Will grew more curious about the science of meteorology and decided to pursue a degree in Geoscience at Mississippi State. He graduated summa cum laude and took classes that have made him eligible for the prestigious “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” designation that is awarded by the AMS.

Will was selected to go storm chasing with two professors while he was in school. He spent two weeks traveling across the United States with two professors and a few other students. In total, the group crossed 10 states, traveled over 8,000 miles, and saw 6 tornadoes. Will is confident that “hands on” experience will allow him to provide the most accurate information during severe weather coverage.

While at State, Will won a national championship with the forecasting team, beating out over 70 other institutions that encompassed 1,800 forecasters. Will placed 17th in the nation and 4th in his category of juniors and seniors.

Will Simmons was awarded the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation by the American Meteorological Society in November 2012. To be eligible, he had to take advanced coursework in school, pass a rigorous meteorological exam, and have is on-air work critiqued and graded by a review board. Meteorologists who hold this designation are in the minority.

When not forecasting and tracking storms, Will enjoys flying airplanes, playing different instruments, and staying fit by running and playing tennis.

He has a passion for communicating weather to people and looks forward to providing accurate, timely forecasts for the region. Having lived in North Mississippi over 20 years, Will knows the area and weather pattern well. Send him an email if you have any questions, comments, or need a tennis partner.
