Northeast Honor Society Takes Top Honors

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society received a variety of awards at the annual Mississippi/Louisiana regional convention held on the Booneville campus in March. BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Iota Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society came away from the annual Mississippi/Louisiana regional conference with high honors.

Northeast’s Phi Theta Kappa was named a five-star chapter for the twelfth consecutive year in a row. The five-star chapter award is the highest ranking that a chapter can receive.

Northeast sophomore Shane Robertson of Pontotoc was awarded the top prize in the region for the re-design the Pontotoc native did of the Northeast Phi Theta Kappa website.

With technical assistance from Northeast webmaster Jeffrey Powell, Robertson re-designed the website to make more user friendly and aid in the presentation of information with links for Honors Forum, College Project, Honors in Action, Iota Zeta News, Newsletters, Photos, a calendar of events and links to the Northeast Mississippi Community College home page, the National Phi Theta Kappa website and the regional Phi Theta Kappa website.

Along with its five-star chapter award and first place in the chapter website category, Northeast’s Phi Theta Kappa also claimed three top 10 places in College Project, Honors in Action and the Most Distinguished Chapter.

Judges honored Northeast in the College Project category for the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Day that is held in late April each year and serves as a recognition for academic awards and draws in a successful alumni as the keynote speaker for the event.

For its Honors in Action award, Northeast’s Phi Theta Kappa selected to enter its “Food of Thought, for Life” campaign that the organization teamed with the Cultural Arts Committee on the Booneville campus to provide thought-provoking conversation and discussion about the role food plays in every-day life.

Northeast also received a top 10 award for the Most Distinguished Chapter in the Mississippi/Louisiana region.

President Clark Martin of Booneville received the Order of the Golden Key Award at the conference as well while Tyler White of Booneville was elected as the northern district representative for the Mississippi/Louisiana region.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually. Recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges. Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter has been named a five-star chapter, the highest ranking attainable, for the twelfth consecutive year.
