Alcorn, County, Miss. (WCBI) – A Northeast Mississippi Community College team bus caught fire Tuesday night as softball players were returning from a game.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Spokesman Trooper Ray Hall says the bus caught fire on Highway 72 in Alcorn County, near the Tippah County line.

Hall said all of the players were able to escape before flames gutted the bus.

Earlier Tuesday evening, the team played a game at Southwest Tennessee Community College.

A player tweeted a flat tire caught on fire and then flames engulfed the charter bus.

Northeast Mississippi Community College Executive Vice President Ricky Ford issued this statement: “All of our kids are safe and back at school. We will assess the equipment lost in the morning and have discussions with our insurance provider to determine how we will get these items replaced. But the safety of our kids is paramount and we’re happy they are back on campus.”

The incident remains under investigation.
