TUPELO, Miss.  (WCBI) – Eleven collaborative groups from Mississippi could become the first in the state to receive funding for Pre-K programs.

All of the groups have been nominated to receive grants under the Mississippi Early Learning Collaborative Act, and among these eleven are two from Northeast Mississippi.

The Monroe County Gilmore Early Learning Initiative Collaborative, and the Corinth-Alcorn Prentiss Early Learning Collaborative would use the grant money to place their 4-year-olds in different programs provided.

The Early Learning Collaborative Act provides Mississippi’s first state issued funds to Pre-K. Mississippi is one of the first in the nation and the only in the region to not spend public money on Pre-K programs.

The act issues funds to collaborative groups to broaden the quality of early-childhood learning. Mississippi allotted a total of  $6 million for the year of funding.

The State Board of Education has to approve the funding during today’s board meeting.
