Nuclear Waste in Mississippi

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi Energy Institute, a non-profit group, is trying to get Mississippi legislatures to consider making Mississippi a storage site for used nuclear fuel.

Proponents say that since opponents appear to have blocked federal plans to store the country’s nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, that now there’s an opportunity to bring billions of dollars and create thousands of jobs by storing it in Mississippi. Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has pushed to diversify energy options.

Northern District Public Service Commission Brandon Presley says Mississippi is not a dump site.

“To turn Mississippi into the nation’s septic tank for nuclear waste just blows my mind. How in the world anybody could think this is a good idea? Gov. Bryant said he wants to study it more. There is nothing to study. This would kill jobs in Mississippi. This would kill our tourism industry, and we are not a dump in this state,” said Brandon Presley.
