STURGIS, Miss. – (WCBI) An Oktibbeha County family spent their Wednesday afternoon sifting through what’s left of their burned out home.

Kenny and Brenda Gazaway were sleeping, when Kenny woke up to a power outage around 5 a.m. Wednesday. That is when he saw flames on the opposite end of the home. By the time volunteer firefighters arrived, the wooden structure on Hwy. 12 in Sturgis was fully engulfed.

The Gazaways’ grandchildren, ages 3 mos. and 2 years old, were also in the home at the time of the blaze. Thankfully, everyone escaped from the house.

“He woke me up and told me the power was off and the dogs were barking, so he got up to see what was going on. He came to this end of the house and saw flames and told me the house was on fire. He grabbed one of the grandkids and I grabbed one and we ran out. It could’ve been way worse, but we’re just thankful that the babies are okay, and we’re ok and that was the important thing,” says Brenda Gazaway.

The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical in nature. The Gazaways did not have rental insurance. Found out how you can help by contact O-SERVS.
