West Point, MS, Monday, March 10, 2014: (PRESS RELEASE) A Monroe County man was arrested Sunday morning in connection with a shooting in West Point that left one man injured. At 3:25am Sunday Officers responded to a call at the SOCO Truck Stop on Highway 45 alternate North in West Point. The caller reported to dispatchers that multiple had been fired. As officers were responding, E911 reported that a man was in the emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that an altercation occurred in the parking lot at the truck stop between two individuals from the adjacent county. It’s unclear how the situation led to a shooting but it was reported to investigators that some friction may have started earlier at a party.

According to Chief Tim Brinkley, “The fight somehow ended up at the Truck Stop and shots were fired resulting in one man being shot in the arm. There were several people in the area when the shots were fired and it’s amazing that only one person was injured. ”

The injured man was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center West Point by friends who were on the scene when the shooting occurred.

Once West Point Investigators determined the identity of the shooter, Monroe County Deputies arrested and detained 32 year old Joseph R. Ewing of 10044 Homestead Road, Aberdeen without incident. West Point officials charged him with 1 count of Aggravated Assault. He has been released on a $50,000.00 bond. His initial appearance has been set for March 25 in the West Point Municipal Court. This case is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the West Point Police Department at (662) 494-1244.
