Oxford Okays Diversity Resolution

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – The Oxford Board of Aldermen has adopted a resolution that spells out the city’s official stance when it comes to discrimination and diversity.

With Tuesday’s action, Oxford became the third Mississippi city where a major university is located to adopt the diversity resolution. The others are Starkville and Hattiesburg.

The resolutions are all similar and specifically include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender protection in the cities’ official, policy statement on diversity.

Oxford Alderman John Morgan said: “Oxford’s an open community, and everyone’s welcome here.”

Chamber of Commerce CEO Jon Maynard says the diversity statement would help with the area’s economic development.

Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin says Oxford has joined cities across the country that have spoken out for diversity.
