BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It was an eventful Saturday morning as children from the Palmer Home got a chance to experience the outdoors.

“It feels awesome because they end up buying all this stuff for you and some people in this world, they don’t appreciate it but I do. And I’m pretty sure everyone else here does too,” said Tyler Miler from the Palmer Home.

It’s an opportunity to learn how to hunt during Mississippi’s Youth Hunt Weekend. Break Away Outdoors hosted an annual tradition in the outskirts of Brooksville for underprivileged children of the Palmer Home. The 20 kids were given a chance to shoot guns and get a feel for the great outdoors.

“We like to introduce kids to the outdoors and show them what the nature has to offer, a lot of these kids like I said don’t have the chance and we get them out here and they love it. This is something that becomes a life long love for them,” said Justin Wilkes, Secretary of Break Away Outdoors.

The non profit group and other donations from local vendors provided the kids with all the gear they needed for the day.  Children were paired up with hunting instructors to help guide them through the day.

“This is an eye opening experience for some of them, we do have repeat kids. Everything is provided to the kids, they get camouflage clothes, they get an orange vest, they get boots, they get caps, they get gloves, everything they need to go hunting,” said Nate Irby, Director of Communications with the Mississippi Forestry Association.

“It feels really great to be here with our friends and our friends and people that are able to take care of us and supply this for us,” said Crissy Marple of the Palmer Home.

The Palmer Home for Children was founded in 1898 and had continued to give kids bigger opportunities for the future.
