Video: Pay Your Fines In Winston County, Before It Goes Public

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Delinquent fines are a major problem in Winston County. When people don’t pay, it can add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

But, the Winston County Board of Supervisors has come up with a creative way to try and change that, putting delinquent names in the city newspaper.

(WCBI)- Winston County Justice Court Clerk Tabby Dempsey says the list is in alphabetical order and includes the person’s name, charge, court date and fine amount.

“They have listed anyone that owes the county old fines, 3 months and older. They’re giving them an opportunity to come in and take care of these fines before we issue warrants and have them picked up They have 30 days to come in and pay them. Once that warrant is issued, it will just add more money to what they have to pay.”

Winston county resdients have different viewpoints about having names published in th e paper. Some said, yes it is right and that it will help people pay their fines while others said it is simply embarrassing.

Demspey says whether you’re embarrassed or not, just make it a priority, and pay up.

“The County is just trying to collect the money that is owed to them. It’s like $883-thousand! So we’ve got a lot of money out there that we need to collect,” Says Dempsey.
