(ABERDEEN, ms) (WCBI) Aberdeen could be headed for a special election to determine if a change to the city charter making the police chief position appointed rather than elected goes forward

Current Police Chief Henry Randle led the petition drive asking for a referendum on the charter change.

City clerk Jackie Benson says Randle has already turned in petitions carrying more than 800 names. That’s well above the 500 registered voters needed to force a vote.

Benson says the next step now is verifying all the names belong to registered Aberdeen voters. Once that’s done the information will go to the Governors office which will then set the date for the vote.
