Pitts Announces Candidacy For Tupelo Mayor’s Race

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A longtime business and civic leader wants to be the next mayor of Tupelo.

City Council President Fred Pitts made it official this afternoon, he’s throwing his hat into the race for Tupelo mayor.

Pitts has served on the council since 2008.  He owns SafeStore of Tupelo, a document and office records storage firm.

He says more needs to be done to attract homeowners to the city.  Also, Pitts believes there needs to be an emphasis on helping the tourism industry and employees in other fields.

I think we have overlooked tourism in our community. I won’t go over all numbers I said in my speech but it’s a huge number of employees in that field. We’ve got the Toyotas, we have supporting plants, we will continue to get those hopefully business will grow but we need to look at other ways to bring and keep businesses here in Tupelo that can employ all types of employees,” Pitts said.

Pitts is the first to announce his candidacy since Mayor Jack Reed, Jr. said last week that he will not seek a second term.
