Video: Plan Recommended to Lower Prison Costs

[bitsontherun OA341kY6]

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Taxpayers can’t afford the rising costs of putting people in prison. But they can’t stand letting inmates out early either.

State Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps and a study committee released a plan today it says will address those problems and the $266 million in additional prison costs the state says it’ll need in the next decade if changes aren’t made.

The changes include limits on early releases, true minimum sentences and improved victim notification.

On the flip side, judges are given more options for alternative sentences. And fewer people would be returned to prison for technical parole violations.

Most of the changes will be reviewed by the Legislature when it convenes in January.
