In an unrelated case, a Columbus man is charged with sexually assaulting a juvenile girl.

Police say 21-year-old Danzel Latham was arrested following an incident this week. Police were called after the girl’s mother found out about the incident.

Latham and the girl’s family know each other.

He is free on $25,000 bond pending a Dec. 20 hearing in city court.

Meanwhile, a Tupelo police officer is cleared of any wrong doing in a July fatal shooting.

The Lee County Grand Jury reviewed an investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and found the July 30 shooting death of 22-year-old Gregory Martinez Hughes did not warrant criminal charges.

The Verona man was shot in the chest after he pulled a small-caliber handgun and fired a shot at two Tupelo officers who responded to a shots fired call at Barley Courts apartments on Highway 145.

The officer, who has not been named, is transitioning back to full-time patrol duties.
