COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- As retailers prepare for the busiest time of year, there’s also a growing concern about the darker side of holiday shopping, shoplifting.

Gladys Nicholson is the assistant manager at Shoe Dept. in Columbus.  She says while the treat of shoplifting always looms, during the holidays stores are always on their guard.

“At this time of year there is a lot of shoplifting, but usually our company, what we do is we take and leave one shoe in a box, then the other shoe is in the back and that helps us during this time of year,” says Nicholson.

There’s also an increase in security.

“We have security that walks up and down our malls, making sure our customers are okay and the employees at the mall as well,” says Nicholson.

According to the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, shoplifting has become one of the most prevalent crimes in the Country, averaging about 550,000 incidents a day.

Gladys says her company takes the proper measures to not only prevent shoplifting, but help keep customers happy as well.

“They allow us seasonal help and they give us extra hours and that helps the store and helps us to watch our stores on the shoplifting, but most of all, it gives us that extra help for our customers and gives them good customer satisfaction and makes the holiday season even better for our customers,” says Nicholson.

Shoplifting not only hurts businesses, but communities too. Customers may end up paying more to cover the losses from theft.
