JACKSON, Miss.  (WCBI) – Lowndes County State Representative Jeff Smith wants to give school board members a pay raise.

The proposed legislation would give school board members a $9,600 salary per year and make them eligible for the Public Employees Retirement System.

Board members would still receive reimbursement payments for any out-of-pocket expenses.

If a member misses 20 percent or more of meetings, except for military duty excuses, they must reimburse the school district that portion of the salary.

House Bill 122 has not made it out of committee.

Smith is the attorney for the Lowndes County School Board.
