WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI)-Family, friends, and people in West Point paid their respects to the late Senator Bennie Turner Sunday afternoon.

A public visitation was held at Turner and Associates Justice Building in West Point.

Turner passed away Tuesday at the University Medical Center in Jackson. He’d been suffering from a brain tumor.

Two of Senator Turner’s former church members who attended the visitation say they’ll remember him most as an honorable man who cared deeply about his community.

“He loved his church members and he loved his family. And he also loved the public. He was just an outgoing, nice person to me. He had a sweet spirit,” says Mary Ewings.

“He left a good legacy here for the people to remember him as Bennie Turner,” says Sarah Louis Edwards.

Senator Tuner leaves behind a wife and three daughters.

His funeral is Monday morning at Third Mount Olive Baptist Church in West Point.
