JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Incumbent U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson defeated a challenge from Damien Fairconetue Tuesday in the Democratic primary in Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District.
No Republican primary was held.
The district covers all or parts of 27 counties, including the Mississippi Delta, parts of the Jackson area and southwest Mississippi.
Fairconetue, of Clinton, ran a low-profile campaign.
Thompson raised $770,000 since his last election, spending $550,000 and ending with nearly $1.4 million in cash. Fairconetue didn’t file campaign finance reports with the Federal Election Commission.
Thompson will face independent Troy Ray and Shelley Shoemake of the Reform Party in the Nov. 4 general election.
