TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo area residents got the chance to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Health Care Act, better known as Obamacare, Saturday.

Cover MS sponsored the event held at the Link Center.

There were certified counselors on hand to help residents sign up either on the website or with old fashioned paper applications.

They were also available to answer questions about the controversial program, which has been plagued by computer glitches.

One question has been can they keep their current doctor?

“That depends on the plan that they choose,” said Valerie Long, Cover MS. “And that’s one of the considerations that we ask them because these are not only just people from Tupelo. But we have people from other areas as well. So that’s one of the considerations, if you want to keep your current doctor that kind of thing and the navigators will help them with that.”

Long says December 23 is the last day to sign up in order to be covered by January 1.

She says if you couldn’t make Saturday’s session, there are two agencies in the Tupelo that offer in-person help – CATCH Kids and Access Family Health have counselors equipped to give assistance.
