Rust College Postpones Trail Marker Unveiling

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Freedom Trail marker unveiling at Rust College scheduled for Thursday was postponed.

Visit Mississippi spokeswoman Paige Hunt says the event was postponed due to scheduling conflicts.

Rust College was slated to unveil two historic markers honoring the Council of Federated Organizations and those involved in the 1964 Freedom Summer Project in Holly Springs. The COFO ceremony was held near the campus.

The markers would have recognized the activities of students, including boycotting the segregated Holly Theater and assisting with voter registration in the region.

Rust College is a private four-year, liberal arts college. It is the oldest of the 11 historically black colleges related to the United Methodist Church, the second oldest private college in Mississippi and the oldest historically black college in the state.
