AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — While many hospitals publicly celebrate the birth of the first New Year babies, a small but growing number are taking a different approach.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recently said the risk of infant abductions could be more likely during the holidays. The center said that’s particularly true of New Year babies which traditionally are publicized in local and regional media.

Acting on the center’s information, Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory decided not to allow media interviews with parents or show photos of the first baby born there this year.

Several hospitals in Alabama also adopted the policy. Jackson Hospital spokeswoman Miranda Nobles told the Montgomery Advertiser the hospital would no longer release the identities of babies born Jan. 1. Spokeswoman for Baptist Health Merrill South also said the facilities have adopted a new policy against allowing media interviews with parents or showing photos of New Year babies.
