Safety First for Cats and People at Cedarhill Sanctuary

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Big cats a beautiful, but they are also extremely dangerous.

Just this week a woman was killed at a Lion Sanctuary in California when she was cleaning a cage that wasn’t properly locked.

At Cedarhill Sanctuary in Lowndes County safety is top priority.

They house more than a dozen big cats. It’s not a zoo, not a breeding facility, just a place for abused or neglected exotic animals to peacefully live out their days.

Cats are always placed in secure locations when their cages are cleaned, and its always a two person job.

Head Caretaker MIchelle Cranford says,  “At our facility we never, ever go in with any of our big cats. It’s wrong. Just don’t. We have extra safety precautions that we take. We use a buddy system when we’re going in, someone always has their eye on a big cat. ”

Cedarhill is a non-profit facility, its entirely funded by donor contributions.
