School Ranking Formula Needs More Work

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – In January, the Mississippi Board of Education gave the nod on the new model for calculating the learning growth in the state’s schools, but the U.S. Department of Education stated it needed improvements.

The USDE says the formula needs to be revised to show more consideration towards the graduation rate. The new calculating system will take the place of the model that used the Quality of Distribution of Index, growth and graduation rate to elementary schools. The new system will take in consideration the percentage of students who are proficient in reading, math and science.

The Mississippi Department of Education has called meetings to nail down a decision on how to proceed.  The revised high school index will be presented to the Commission on School Accreditation on Thursday.
