JACKSON – Mississippi could be closer to erasing a law that requires a later start to the school year.

The House on Thursday removed a procedural block from Senate Bill 2571, sending it to Gov. Phil Bryant. It proposes repealing a law that says schools can start no earlier than the third Monday in August.

It was not immediately clear whether Bryant will sign the bill.

Gulf Coast tourism officials pushed the later start date, saying it would provide an economic boost by giving families more vacation time in August. Most districts have been starting the academic year in early to mid-August. The later date was to take effect with the 2014-15year.

House Education Committee Chairman John Moore says superintendents pushed legislators to keep start date as a local decision.
