SEC Media Select Preseason Honors, Rankings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WCBI Sports) – Two Bulldogs and five Rebels are named to the 2013 Preseason Media Days All-SEC Team Thursday and the conference selects its preseason predicted finishes.

The media picked Ole Miss to finish fourth in the SEC West behind Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU. Mississippi State is picked sixth, behind Auburn and ahead of Arkansas. The Crimson Tide were picked to win the West and the overall SEC Championship, while Georgia was tabbed to win the East.

16 players from Alabama are recognized on the three All-SEC lists.

Seniors Gabe Jackson and LaDarius Perkins are honored from Mississippi State.

Perkins finished second in the SEC last season in all-purpose yards per game (125.8) and became the ninth player in MSU history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season (1,024). The running back was also one of only two players in the country (Adam Muema, San Diego State) to rush for a touchdown in each of his first seven games last fall.

Jackson was named to the 2013 Preseason All-SEC First Team Thursday after being selected to the Rotary Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy watch lists the last two weeks. The Liberty, Miss., native made the list for the second-consecutive year after earning All-America honors as a junior in 2012 by Phil Steele, Scout.com, Pro Football Weekly and Sports Illustrated. Jackson, a 2013 preseason All-American by most publications, is widely considered the number one offensive guard prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Sophomore Denzel Nkemdiche was selected to the first team at linebacker to the lead the Ole Miss contingent. Junior Donte Moncrief was a second-team pick at wide receiver, while senior Jeff Scott (RB), junior C.J. Johnson (DE) and senior Charles Sawyer (DB) were voted to the third team.

Nkemdiche and Moncrief have already been recognized on watch lists for national awards this preseason. Nkemdiche is on the watch list for the Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player) and Lombardi Award (top lineman or linebacker), while Moncrief is up for the Biletnikoff Award (top receiver).

Last year, Nkemdiche, Moncrief and Johnson earned All-SEC distinction from at least one media outlet after helping Ole Miss to a 7-6 record and a victory over Pitt in the BBVA Compass Bowl.
