Selma Protest Seeks Video of Police Shooting

SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Demonstrators in Selma want access to the video of a 2013 police shooting that killed a 74-year-old man.

The Selma Times-Journal (http://bit.ly/15SwcwG) reports that a dozen demonstrators marched to the Selma Police Department on Wednesday to protest the police department’s refusal to release the video. The shooting was recorded on the officer’s lapel camera.

Selma Police Chief William Riley said Ananias Shaw produced a hatchet and tried to rush one of the officers when they approached him during a 2013 disturbance call. The officer shot and killed Shaw.

A grand jury decided not to charge the officer.

Riley said the officer acted correctly. He said the department is not producing the video because future litigation could be involved.
