Several Area Cities Show Increase in Sales Tax Collections

NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) – Consumers opened up their wallets for back-to-school shopping, helping drive retail sales up in August across most of Northeast Mississippi. New state numbers show taxes collected on August retail sales were up in 56 of 92 towns over the previous year.

It was the best overall August increase in four years. Oxford, Columbus, Tupelo, Louisville, West Point, New Albany and Pontotoc were among the biggest gainers. Starkville and Booneville were the only two major retail centers to see declines.
