Sheriff: All 3 Escaped Inmates Now Back in Custody

BUTLER, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama sheriff says all three inmates accused of escaping from a west Alabama jail by overpowering a guard have now been captured.

Sheriff’s officials said the men assaulted and choked the guard, wrapping his head in a towel and spraying him in the face with a cleaning solution during the escape early Saturday morning.

Choctaw County Sheriff Tom Abate told The Associated Press early Monday morning that 23-year-old Demarcus Woodard — the last inmate still on the run — was captured in Tuscaloosa around 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

Abate said publicity about the escape led to numerous tips from the public, one of which paid off and led authorities to Woodard.

The other inmates — 23-year-old Justin Gordon and 32-year-old Gemayel Culbert — were captured over the weekend.
