STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Finding your way around in a unfamiliar place can be frustrating. Now, local Main Street organizations are finding ways to help visitors get around. The Wayfinding Signage System has an unusual name but a simple purpose, to help tourists find their destination. The Greater Starkville Development Partnership and Mississippi Hills Heritage Area are partnering to give local communities new direction signs.
“We learned the contacts within MDOT, what height the signs had to be. A lot of things that you don’t think about. Where to put them and you have to think like a tourist. A lot of valuable information,” says Corinth Area Convention & Visitors Bureau rep Christy Burns.
Starkville has 11 signs, with eight more on the way. They stretch from the main highways, through downtown and connect with the Mississippi State campus.
Jan Miller of the Mississippi Main Street Association says the Starkville Wayfinding system is a great example for other communities.
“The great thing about it is, it really helps them to have destinations for people to find and it’s something that all Main Street communities aspire to do,” says Jan Miller of Mississippi Main Street Association.
The Starkville Wayfinding signage project took about three years to put in place.
Other Main Street Associations will now go back to their boards to determine if the signage project is something their community wants to invest in.
