TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)-Students in Tupelo will be allowed to use their personal computers and tablets at school next year.

Sixth graders at Milam Elementary will pilot a “bring your own device” program.

Currently the school provides MacBook laptops to the students, but school officials say often the students have more up-to-date devices at home.

Students who don’t own a computer will still be provided a district MacBook.

School officials say the pilot program will give the school district a chance to explore what to do in the future when those MacBooks need to be replaced.

School officials say precautions will be taken to prevent theft, and to keep students from visiting inappropriate websites at school.
